Chalk Stream Mapping

This project seeks to create a definitive map of all the chalk streams in Lincolnshire, shining a spotlight on these highly important and rare habitats. Chalk streams are identified by a distinctive set of characteristics, but not all chalk streams are the same.

Stretching from the Yorkshire Wolds in the north to Dorset in the south, the UK’s chalk bedrock underpins a network of river systems that differ widely in their appearance and behaviour. Northern chalk streams, like those in Lincolnshire, have their own unique story to tell, shaped by differences in geology, hydrology, ecology, and the influence of human activity compared to their southern counterparts.

Even within Lincolnshire, no two chalk streams are identical. Each one is a product of its physical structure, water chemistry, and the ecological systems it supports, factors that vary naturally but also respond to change and pressures. Over time, these river systems have undergone significant modifications, often to support agriculture, industry or urban demands, which has significantly altered their original states. This can lead to degradation or even the loss of the qualities that define them as chalk streams.

By mapping and better understanding these remarkable rivers and streams, we can uncover what makes each one unique and assess how closely they reflect the characteristics of a healthy chalk stream. This deeper understanding allows us to identify opportunities to conserve, enhance, and restore these vital waterways, ensuring their protection for generations to come.
